I was shoving my mule in his shed
When a meteor fell on his head.
I curse my bad luck …
Why didn’t he duck?
Next time, an alpaca instead.
Let’s not blame the beast of burden, nor bad luck. The fault, dear brutes, is not in our stars, but in ourselves: whatever animal you capture and exploit, it will be the Wrong Choice.

But what if alpacas proved more truculent?
Hi Loris
I have to confess that I don’t know a reliable method for rating the relative truculence of the mule and the alpaca, but I think we should note that (a) no animal likes to be ‘shoved’, so its truculence is probably induced rather than innate; and (b) the mule may well have failed to notice the incoming meteorite, but so did the narrator; and, therefore, whatsoever beast of burden he chooses as the mule’s replacement, his own continuing lack of cosmic vigilance will very probably shorten the poor thing’s life in exactly the same way.
Good wishes from Rick
